THE ROLE OF AUTARKY ON INDIAN FOREIGN POLICY

AUTARKY

Autarky refers basically to the economic goal of self-suficiency and non-dependency.

MOMENT 1:

The goal of autarky lead India to adopt Non-Alignment as a tool to get technologic transfers and reach economic self-suficiency.

MOMENT 2:

Due to the economic fiasco of Indira Ghandi and Rajiv Gandhi, the US offered help under liberalization and devaluation of the Rupee. She just devaluated, but Narashima Rao latter liberalized.

In 1991 India adopted the LPG under Narashima Rao P.M. and Mamohan Singh as Financial Minister.

Gujral (1996-97) said that diplomatic relations with U.S. should be strengthened and that, instead of looking abroad, India should look for the neighbors.

Vajpayee (1998-2004) emphasized more the US approximation and kept with the liberalization process.
